SWITZERLAND’S SLOW MO SUFFOCATION – CO₂ QUOTAS? BETWEEN GREEN TAXES AND CARBON CAGES, THE GREAT EXODUS HAS BEGUN

Forget snow capped Alps, Switzerland’s new frontier is now the nearest airport… and not to catch a flight, but to flee the Confederation.

Meanwhile, a Green Party heavyweight (Christophe Clivaz, evidently lost in his own carbon charts) unveils the revolutionary plan to hand every Swiss a personal CO₂ allowance for their flights, just to keep the jet set in check without bankrupting the modest globetrotters…

Ah, hypocrisy, you seductive beast… Our fellow citizens are already stashing away their snowboards and urgently recycling their driver’s licenses, preferring the dolce vita minus the fiscal extortion to Swiss rigor that’s itching to tax every last exhalation on an Airbus.

While we tinker with carbon cards and slap “frequent flyer” levies on anyone daring to leave Switzerland more than twice a year, nearly 30,000 free spirits bow out each year—trading Swiss chocolate for horizons far less policed and, crucially, far less taxed.

By the end of 2024, 826,708 Swiss nationals were living abroad (about 11% of the population), a record high, and a far cry from the “Trente Glorieuses” when Switzerland was hailed as the social economic utopia of Europe.

THE PARADOX?

The more we burden the average citizen with “fair” new levies in the name of the planet, the more the planet counts Swiss expatriates. At this rate, we shouldn’t be surprised if the next quota is a per capita “right to breathe,” designed to compensate for the oxygen siphoned off by bureaucratic paperwork.

A FALL WORTHY OF A GREEK TRAGEDY

Once the beacon of economic and social freedom, Switzerland is locking itself inside its own fortress of regulations and taxes. One might think our famed “neutrality” pledged never to soar higher than its own bureaucratic ambitions. If this trend continues, the only way to admire our lakes and mountains will be reclining on a tropical beach in a wonderfully free, tax friendly country, live streamed from an Instagram account hosted… outside Switzerland, of course.

PERSONAL NOTE

Frankly, if Switzerland scrapped the wealth tax, the federal direct tax, and the notional rental value tax, and capped all personal and corporate taxes at 10%, we’d instantly become one of the world’s most attractive fiscal paradises!

But that will never fly, far too many entitled elites, left and right, rely on squeezing those who work hard and create real wealth. A sad state of affairs for our country, indeed…
